Arendal is the biggest town on the Sørlandet coast, built around a small harbour pool called Pollen and the wooden wharf lanes of Tyholmen. The centre is compact and walkable, the sea islands are the real draw, and almost everything happens between June and August. Outside summer it is quiet, cheaper and mostly a base for the coast.

Getting around

The centre is compact: Pollen, Tyholmen, the bus terminal and the station are all within about 15 minutes on foot. White city buses run from the bus terminal for the outer districts; parking in the centre is limited, so use a parking house. Taxis exist but are expensive by most visitors' standards.

Watch out

Safety

Arendal is a small, calm coastal town and violent crime is rare. The real issues are slippery wharf boards and rocks, cold sea water, and summer crowds on the ferries and in the harbour bars.
  • Summer is the season: many harbour restaurants, the Merdø ferry and campsites are seasonal — check dates before you book.
  • Rain is possible all year on this coast; pack a shell jacket even in July.
  • Alcohol is served only in licensed bars and restaurants, and Norway's drink prices are high.
  • Parking in the centre fills up on summer weekends; use a parking house.
