The north is Madagascar's second trip, not its first. It rewards travellers who fly to Antsiranana and stay put: the bay, the tsingy at Ankarana, the Amber Mountain rainforest and the beaches at Ramena all sit within a few hours of one city. Roads are slow and the distances between the north-west (Nosy Be) and the north-east (Sava) are long, so pick one side.
