- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Colombia ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Migración Colombia or a Colombian consulate; some travellers must complete an online migration form before arrival.
- Colombia ↗Security advice lists specific departments and border areas: check your own government's advice for every place on your route, including coastal roads.
- Colombia ↗Never accept drinks, food or cigarettes from strangers, and be careful with people met on dating apps: drugging (including with scopolamine) followed by robbery is a known risk.
- Colombia ↗Fill in Check-MIG only on the official Migración Colombia site; it is free, and lookalike sites charge a fee.
Andino is Colombia's three-cordillera highland: Bogotá at about 2,600 m, Medellín at about 1,500 m, and the coffee axis between them. Road distances here are deceptive because of elevation and trucks on two-lane highways, so the working rule is to fly the long legs and bus only the short ones. Bogotá is the entry hub and the museum and colonial base; Medellín is the second base with the metrocable and Guatapé; Salento and the Cocora valley are the coffee-and-wax-palm stop; Villa de Leyva and Zipaquirá are day-trips from Bogotá.

- Bogotá to Medellín by road is 8–12 h with mountain passes; the flight is about an hour.
- Altitude: Bogotá about 2,600 m, Tunja higher, El Cocuy and Los Nevados much higher; plan the first day light and check with your doctor before high treks.
- Mountain roads can close after landslides and wash-outs, especially in the rainy seasons; check road status before a long bus day.
- El Cocuy and Los Nevados require planning, registered guides in places, and acclimatisation; they are not casual day hikes.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral | Bogotá | 120 min | unknown | Bus or train from Bogotá; doable as a half-day, back the same afternoon. |
| Laguna de Guatavita | Bogotá | 150 min | unknown | Entry is by timed guided visit and numbers are capped; book ahead and check the day's slots. |
| Guatapé | Medellín | 150 min | unknown | Long day by road; the rock stairs and the painted town are the two stops. |
| Villa de Leyva | Bogotá | 210 min | unknown | 3–4 h each way; a day trip is thin, one night is better. |
Bags between cities
No luggage forwarding culture here; travel with what you can carry, since mountain buses load bags underneath and flights charge for extra pieces.

- Bogotá and the high plateau
- Cool and often overcast year-round; rain can fall any month, with wetter spells around April–May and October–November. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons.
- Medellín and the coffee axis
- Milder and greener; the driest months are usually December to March, with a second drier window around July–August.
The Andino has no single best month: the high plateau is cool and damp all year, the coffee slopes are mild all year. December to March is the most reliable window across the region, and also the busiest.
