- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Ecuador ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an Ecuadorian consulate.
- Ecuador ↗The Galápagos has its own entry controls: a transit control card bought at the airport before departure, a national park entrance fee, and inspections for food and plants. Check official Galápagos rules before booking.
- Ecuador ↗Several coastal provinces (including Guayas, where Guayaquil is) are under official warnings and periodic states of emergency; read your government's advice before routing through them.
The Ecuadorian Andes is a 600 km corridor of colonial towns and volcanoes at 2,200–3,000 m, linked by the E35 Pan-American Highway. Buses cover almost every leg but short distances take time on mountain roads. Sleep in Quito for the north and Otavalo, in Baños for the central volcanoes, in Cuenca for the south; fly the long legs if you are short on days.

Day trip
Night sequences
- 5 nights
- Quito 3 + Otavalo 1 + Cotopaxi day trip
- 7 nights
- Quito 3 + Baños 2 + Cuenca 2 (fly CUE–UIO if the ticket is open-jaw)
- Altitude sickness is real above 3,000 m: ascend slowly, drink water, skip alcohol the first night.
- Mountain roads close after landslides in the rainy months; ask locally before a long bus leg.
- Do not hike volcanoes alone; hire a registered guide and check the current volcano alert level.

- Northern Andes (Quito, Otavalo, Ibarra)
- Cool and often cloudy; rain most afternoons. June–September is the driest window.
- Central volcanoes (Cotopaxi, Baños)
- Baños is mild all year; the Cotopaxi high slopes are cold and windy.
- Southern Andes (Cuenca, Loja)
- Cuenca is spring-like; Cajas can be foggy and wet any month.
The dry window is roughly June to September and again December to January; the wettest months are March to May. Elevation matters more than season: pack layers, a rain shell and sun protection.
