The Galápagos are 1,000 km off the mainland and everything moves by boat, so the first decision is land-based or ship-based. Land-based: sleep in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz), Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal) or Puerto Villamil (Isabela), hop between them by speedboat ($30 one-way) and join day trips. Cruise-based: 60+ boats, park-set itineraries, two excursions a day, and the only practical way to reach the western and northern islands. A 7-night cruise covers most of the main sites; 4–5 nights land-based is cheaper but limited.

Hot/rainy December–June, 26–30 °C, calmest seas; cooler June–November, 20–24 °C, with garúa mist. September–November is low season for cruise availability — many boats go to dry dock — not the best overall time to visit.

Peak naturalist season is December–May; June–August is also busy because animals are active. Divers target July–November for whale sharks at Wolf and Darwin. Christmas and Easter weeks sell out a year ahead.
