Anamur is Turkey's southernmost point on the Anatolian coast, a banana-growing town with a beach strip and one genuinely good sight, Mamure Castle. It sits on the D400 between Alanya and Silifke, so it works as a break in a coastal drive rather than a destination in itself. Summer is hot and sticky; spring and early autumn are the sane windows.

Getting around

Dolmuşes run the 3 km between the town centre and the beach strip. Walking is possible if you are lightly loaded and it is not midday in summer. For Mamure Castle and Anemurium you need a car, taxi or a dolmuş on the coast road.

Watch out

Safety

Anamur is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, the twisty D400 and swimming where there is no lifeguard. Use 112 for everything.
  • Mamure Castle: towers and walls are unsafe and climbing is discouraged.
  • Anemurium has been closed for long periods: check before you drive out.
  • Sandy beaches are loggerhead turtle nesting sites; barbecues and beach umbrellas draw fines and complaints.
  • The D400 is narrow and twisty through the mountains; allow more time than the distance suggests.
  • Anamur Museum by the marina pier has been shut since 2012.
