Amsterdam in July: what to expect

July sits in the middle of the Dutch summer: warm, changeable and windy, with the coast and Randstad (Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, The Hague, Rotterdam) seeing showers rather than steady all-day rain. Expect daytime highs around 20–25 °C, cooler evenings, and short spells that push higher — heatwaves do happen and Dutch buildings are not built for them.

The bigger practical gift is daylight. July evenings stay light very late, so you can eat dinner outside and still walk the canals afterwards. Mornings are the coolest and quietest window for the Rijksmuseum, the Jordaan or a bike ride out to the ring of villages.

July is peak season in Amsterdam. Dutch school holidays, European summer breaks and cruise calls stack up, so the centre, the museum quarter and the canal ring are busy from mid-morning to early evening. Hotel rates are close to their yearly maximum, and the cheapest beds go first — book weeks, not days, ahead.

You can still dodge the worst of it. Go to the big museums at opening time, walk the canals before 10:00 or after 20:00, and use the free ferries behind Centraal Station to reach Noord, which stays far calmer than the centre. Trains run frequently enough that a base in Haarlem, Utrecht or Leiden is a realistic way to cut costs and still see Amsterdam daily.

July is festival month rather than holiday month: the Netherlands has no national public holiday in July, so the calendar is filled with outdoor events, open-air concerts and neighbourhood festivals. Exact dates shift each year — check the organisers' listings before you build a trip around one.

The one fixed anchor is at the start of August: Pride Amsterdam, which the site's Netherlands calendar places early in the month. If you are travelling in the last days of July, expect the city to start filling for it.

Use July for the things that need good weather: the canals by boat, the parks, the beaches and the flat countryside. The museum quarter works in any weather, so save it for a showery day and take the boat or the bike when the sun is out.

Day trips are easy by train. Haarlem and Utrecht are short hops, Zandvoort and the coast give you a beach day, and Alkmaar and the Zaanse Schans cover the classic windmill-and-cheese circuit. Because the evenings are long, you can go out and still have a full evening in the city afterwards.

Pack for warm days and cool, breezy evenings, plus rain that arrives without much warning. Layers beat a single heavy jacket: a T-shirt and light trousers or a dress for the day, a light jumper or jacket for the evening, and a compact rain jacket you can carry all day.

Add comfortable walking shoes — Amsterdam is a walking and cycling city, and cobbles punish thin soles. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for terrace days, a refillable water bottle, and a small bag you can keep zipped in crowds. If a heatwave is forecast, pack for it: Dutch hotels and cafés often have no air conditioning.

June is the site's pick for the best month overall: the longest days, terraces full and the best cycling weather, with crowds already high. May is milder and greener, with Liberation Day on the 5th and Keukenhof closing mid-May.

August keeps the warmth and the crowds, and brings Pride Amsterdam early in the month — but the Netherlands calendar flags it as caution rather than go, with hotels at their dearest. September is the sweet spot if you want warm-enough weather with calmer streets and lower prices.
