Alton Towers
Alton Towers Resort
Go for one full day midweek in May, June or September with a pre-booked online ticket; skip weekends, school holidays and August.
Alton Towers is the UK's largest theme park, built around the ruins of a stately home in rural Staffordshire. It is a single-day park for most visitors: rides, gardens and the Towers sit inside one site, and the nearest towns are small. Two days only pays off if you add the waterpark or want a relaxed pace with young children. The park is seasonal, closes outside the main calendar, and is hard to reach without a car.

Get around
On foot inside the park: it is large and hilly, with long walks between zones. A monorail links the car parks and hotels to the entrance, and the Skyride cable car crosses the valley between the entrance, Forbidden Valley and Fountain Square. Both cut walking but queue at peak times. Without a car, buses run seasonally from Stoke-on-Trent and Uttoxeter; services are infrequent, so check times before you commit.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Do not confuse Alton Towers with Alton, Hampshire: the two are about 185 miles apart.
- Book dated tickets online in advance; gate prices are much higher and peak days can sell out.
- Some rides close for maintenance or in high wind and rain; check the official site on the day.
- Height and health rules apply on every ride; measure children before promising a coaster.
- The last few miles are narrow country lanes; drive carefully and expect slow traffic at closing time.
- Summer and Halloween are the busiest periods, when pickpocketing is the main risk.
Rides are well maintained and staff are first-aid trained; major incidents are very rare. The real risks are crowds in summer and at Halloween, pickpocketing in those crowds, and long walks on steep paths in wet weather.
