Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
- Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
- Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
- Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
- Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.
Alentejo is Portugal's largest region by area: rolling plains of cork oak and olive, walled hill towns, marble towns and megaliths, plus a low-key Atlantic coast. The landscape is not uniform — the dry interior gives way to wooded hills and river valleys near the Spanish border. It rewards a car — buses link the main towns but not the dolmens, the dam or the beaches. Two nights in Évora plus one or two elsewhere is a real trip; a day-trip from Lisbon only shows you Évora.

Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monsaraz | Évora | 60 min | unknown | Car ~50 min; buses are limited — check times before committing. |
| Elvas | Évora | 60 min | unknown | Trains and buses run; the aqueduct and fortifications need 3–4 hours on foot. |
| Beja | Évora | 75 min | unknown | Train or bus; the castle keep is the reason to go. |
| Marvão | Évora | 150 min | unknown | Car ~2 h 30; public transport means changing at Portalegre and services are thin — check connections and times, and sleep over rather than day-trip. |
| Vila Nova de Milfontes | Évora | 120 min | unknown | Car only in practice; beaches and river mouth, cold Atlantic water. |

| Faro / Algarve | Beja / Évora | Train or bus north with a change | ~3 h 30–4 h | No direct rail route: the Faro line runs to Lisbon via Tunes, so Beja or Évora means changing, often at Tunes or Lisbon. |

| Dish | Where | Timing / trap |
|---|---|---|
| Açorda alentejana (bread and coriander soup) | Évora, Beja | Often served with pork and egg; ask if you want it without meat. |
| Migas with pork | Inland towns | Stale bread cooked with pork fat and meat; a lunch dish, heavy. |
| Carne de porco à alentejana | Évora, coast towns | Pork with clams; the name is the region's, the dish is everywhere. |
| Grilled fish and seafood | Sines, Vila Nova de Milfontes | Coast towns do this better than inland; lunch is the value meal. |
| Queijo de Nisa and Évora cheese | Markets and delis | Sheep's milk, sometimes cured; buy small pieces at the market. |
| Medronho liqueur | Throughout the region | Strong spirit from strawberry-tree fruit; sip it, don't shoot it. |
| Alentejo wines | Évora, Borba, Reguengos | Full-bodied reds; many quintas take walk-in tastings by day. |
