The Beiras are three provinces across central Portugal — Beira Litoral on the Atlantic, Beira Alta and Beira Baixa inland to the Spanish border. They sit on the Lisbon–Porto rail and road spine, so you can reach them without a car, but the interior sights (Serra da Estrela, Almeida, the stone villages) need one. Sleep in Coimbra or Aveiro and treat the mountains as day loops; only move hotels if you want two nights high up.
