The Alberta Rockies are two national parks and one connecting road. Banff is the busy southern hub 90 minutes from Calgary; Jasper is quieter, 4 hours north of Banff on the Icefields Parkway. Sleep in Banff for Lake Louise and day hikes, in Jasper for wildlife, dark skies and the Columbia Icefield. Kananaskis Country sits between Calgary and Banff and is the better bet for grizzly sightings with fewer crowds.

Banff to Jasper is 4 hours of driving without stops; the Icefields Parkway deserves a full day, not a rushed transfer.
