Vancouver International Airport (YVR): visitor guide

YVR sits on Sea Island, about 12 km south of downtown Vancouver, and is reached by road over the Arthur Laing Bridge or by the Canada Line SkyTrain, which stops at the terminal. The main terminal is split into a domestic side and an international side, with the US border pre-clearance area in its own wing: if you are flying to the United States you clear US customs here, before boarding, so allow extra time.

The Canada Line station sits between the two terminal buildings, a short covered walk from both. Rental cars are in a separate parkade reached by a covered walkway or shuttle. If you are connecting to a floatplane or seaplane to Victoria or the Gulf Islands, those docks are downtown, not at YVR, so you need to reach the city first.

The Canada Line is the default choice for most arrivals. Trains run from the airport station into downtown, ending at Waterfront Station, in about 25 minutes. You pay a zone fare plus the YVR AddFare, which applies only to journeys starting at the airport; a Compass Card or a tap of a contactless credit card at the gate covers it. The line also stops at Bridgeport, where you can change for Richmond and for the route toward the Tsawwassen ferry terminal.

Taxis from the airport use fixed zone fares to downtown and other set destinations, so you know the price before you get in. Rideshare pickups are signed at the terminal. Driving yourself takes 25–40 minutes to downtown outside rush hour and considerably longer in it; Highway 99 south toward the US border and Whistler is the same road you join from the airport.

The Canada Line runs from early morning until just after midnight, so most evening arrivals can still take the train. If you land after the last train, the taxi rank outside arrivals is the reliable option and the fixed zone fare still applies; rideshare is usually available too, though surge pricing can push it above the taxi fare.

Airport-area hotels along Grant McConachie Way run shuttles through the night and are the cheapest way to sleep if you have an early departure. Downtown hotels are 25–40 minutes away by road at that hour, with little traffic.

YVR has several lounges in the domestic and international terminals, including airline-operated rooms for eligible passengers and pay-at-the-door options. Access rules, opening hours and day-pass prices change, so check with your airline or the lounge operator before you count on one.

The international terminal's food and seating areas stay open for late departures, but many shops close in the evening. If you have a long layover, the Fairmont hotel attached to the international terminal is the only option inside the building.

Rental desks for the major companies are in the parkade across from the terminal, reached by a covered walkway or a short shuttle. Book ahead in summer and around holidays; walk-up rates in July and August are high and popular vehicle classes sell out.

If you are driving to the Rockies or the BC interior, winter tyres are required on many BC routes from 1 October to 30 April. One-way rentals between provinces can carry a large drop fee, so price the return leg before you commit.
