Aberdeenshire is castle country on a low, fertile coast, with the Grampian mountains rising to the west. Aberdeen is the transport hub — air, rail, road and ferries to Orkney and Shetland. Buses radiate from the city to the coast towns and up the Dee valley, but cross-country links are thin, so a car turns a two-base trip into a real one. Sleep in Aberdeen for choice and connections, in Stonehaven or Banchory for a quieter base, and day-trip the castles, the coast villages and Balmoral.
