Zwolle
Give Zwolle one full day and one night: walk the canal-ring centre, climb the Peperbus, then use it as a rail hub for Overijssel.
Zwolle is the capital of Overijssel and the country's second-biggest rail junction after Utrecht, with trains in eight directions. The old centre inside the canal ring is compact, partly car-free and about 10 minutes on foot from the station, so a single night covers the gates, the Peperbus tower and one museum. Two nights only if you add a day trip by train.

Get around
Walk the centre: it is compact, partly car-free and about 10 minutes from the station to the Grote Markt. Rent a bike for the outskirts and the IJssel dykes. City buses run from two terminals, one on each side of the station: most city lines leave from the west side, most regional lines from the east side.
