Zurich, Ontario
Zurich
Zurich is a 1–2 hour stop, not an overnight base: see the Swiss-style main street, then sleep in Grand Bend or London.
Zurich is a village of about 1,000 people in Huron County, 6 km inland from Lake Huron and 68 km north of London. It was founded in 1856 by Swiss immigrant Frederick Knell, and its draw is a compact main street of neo-Swiss and boomtown-front buildings plus the Bean Festival on the fourth Saturday of August. There is one country inn with a German restaurant; everything else is a short drive to the lake beaches at Grand Bend and Bayfield.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transit in the village: without a car you are stranded.
- Many shops and the brewery keep short or seasonal hours; call before driving out.
- Country roads at night are unlit and deer cross them: drive slowly after dusk.
- Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the back roads toward the lake.
Very low crime; the real risks are driving the unlit county roads at night, deer, and winter ice. 911 covers everything.
