Zug

Zug is a small lakeside town and the capital of its canton, 25–30 min by train from Zurich. The old town, the clocktower and the lake promenade take half a day; the Zugerberg funicular adds a viewpoint above the lake. Get around
The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Local buses cover Cham and the Zugerberg base; the Zugerberg funicular climbs from Schönegg. Trains from Zug station reach Zurich in about 25–30 min and Lucerne in about 25 min (check).

- Lake swimming is popular but the water is cold outside July–August; there are no lifeguards at most spots.
- Hotel prices spike during trade fairs and the Stierenmarkt week: book ahead or shift dates.
Zug is a low-crime town and safe to walk at night, including the lakefront. Watch for bicycles on the promenade, cold water when swimming, and bar tabs in the Baarerstrasse area: ask the total before you order.
