Žilina is Slovakia's fourth-largest city and its busiest rail junction, 2 h from Bratislava on the main line and the gateway to the Malá Fatra and the Váh valley. The old town is small and walkable; most travellers spend one night here and push on to the mountains, or stay two and day-trip by train and bus.

Get around
The centre is pedestrianised and small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Trolleybus and bus lines cover the suburbs and the station; a 60-minute ticket costs about €1 and is valid on city buses, regional buses and trains inside the city limits. BikeKIA bike-share has stations across town, with the first 15 minutes free.
