Zhuzhou is a prefecture-level city of about 4 million in eastern Hunan, on the Xiangjiang River between Changsha and Hengyang. It grew as a rail junction where the Beijing–Guangzhou and Shanghai–Kunming lines cross, and it still works best as a transport base: Changsha, Xiangtan, Hengyang and even Zhangjiajie are within a day's reach. Its own draws are a museum, a riverfront belt and a tower, so most travellers pass through rather than stay.
