Give Zhongshan one full day for the Sunwen West Road old town and the Sun Yat-sen birthplace at Cuiheng, or skip it if your trip is Beijing–Shanghai–Xi'an only.
Zhongshan sits on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary, between Guangzhou and Zhuhai, and is named after Sun Yat-sen, who was born in Cuiheng village here in 1866. It is quieter and cheaper than Guangzhou or Shenzhen, with a walkable old downtown and a compact cluster of free museums. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Guangzhou or Zhuhai, or a stop on the way to Macau.
