Base in Wulingyuan for 2 nights, not Zhangjiajie city: the park gate is 40 min away and the sandstone pillars are the whole point.
Zhangjiajie is a small Hunan city that exists as a gateway to two separate mountain sights: Wulingyuan (the sandstone pillar forest, UNESCO-listed) and Tianmen Mountain. The city itself (Yongding District) has a temple, a museum and a snack street; almost everyone comes for the parks. Two nights is the practical minimum, three if you want both mountains without rushing. Spring and autumn are best; summer is hot, wet and crowded.

Scams and watch-outs
- Airport taxi drivers may refuse the meter or invent a parking fee; a city trip should be ¥20–40. Ask your hotel what it should cost.
- Wulingyuan tickets are dated and checked at the gate; the general ticket is valid for several days, so keep it with you.
- Cable cars and the Bailong Elevator close mid-afternoon (roughly 16:00–17:00) — check the day's last descent before you go up.
- Summer brings heavy rain, fog that hides the pillars, and leeches on wet trails; pack a rain shell.
- English is limited outside hotels; have your destination written in Chinese.
Zhangjiajie is safe for tourists; the real risks are steep wet steps, fog that hides the drop, and taxi drivers who won't use the meter. Keep your park ticket on you and check the last cable car time before you climb.
