Zenica
Skip Zenica unless you have a specific reason (steelworks visit, football match, or family). One night is enough; the air quality and limited sights make it a pass-through.
Zenica is Bosnia's fourth-largest city and an industrial hub dominated by the Zenica Steelworks. The old quarter (Stara čaršija) has a mosque, a synagogue-turned-museum, and an Austrian fountain, but the city's main draw is as a transport junction. Most travellers use it as a stop between Sarajevo and Banja Luka or as a base for hiking on Mount Smetovi. The air can be poor, and the city rewards a short visit rather than a long stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'dobar dan', 'merhaba' or 'selam' in Sarajevo; avoid: Assuming everyone is Muslim or everyone is Serb

- Home visit: Shoes off; bring sweets or coffee; avoid: Refusing all food
- Mosques: Cover up, shoes off, quiet; avoid: Walking in front of people praying

Scams and watch-outs

- The steelworks dominates the skyline; the industrial landscape is not to everyone's taste.
- Last trains to Sarajevo and Banja Luka depart around 20:00–21:00; check the schedule.
Zenica is generally safe. The main concerns are air quality (especially in winter) and occasional stray dogs in the outskirts. Keep valuables secure in crowds.
