Sort your apps before you fly, because the two that matter most are the two you cannot install usefully on arrival: offline maps and a way to pay. Download Google Maps offline areas for Lusaka, Livingstone and whichever park region you are visiting while you still have fast Wi-Fi at home or at your first hotel. Coverage on the road is patchy, and a downloaded map keeps working when the signal does not.
WhatsApp is the working channel for lodges, safari operators, transfer drivers and most guesthouses, so set it up with the number you will actually use in Zambia. If you are buying a local SIM, note that Airtel and MTN sell SIMs with passport registration in towns, and bush camps may have Wi-Fi only in the main area. Keep your home number active for banking codes if your bank sends them by SMS.
For money, install your bank or card app and switch on travel notifications before departure.
