Best time to visit Zambia: weather and seasons by month

Zambia has one rainy season and one long dry season, and the safari calendar follows the dry months. The table below is the short version; treat camp opening dates as approximate and confirm with the camp you book.

This is the window most travellers plan around. Vegetation thins, water dries up and animals gather at remaining pools, so sightings get easier as the season goes on. South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are the classic pair, and both are open through these months.

Access is not uniform across the country. Busanga Plains in Kafue stays flooded until about July, so the northern Kafue camps come later than the Luangwa and Zambezi ones. Check opening dates per park rather than assuming the whole country is ready in June.

June and July are the coolest and most comfortable for walking, with cold nights on the plateau. August and September are the sweet spot for game, and also the busiest and most expensive. October delivers the best predator viewing but punishing heat in the valleys, around 40 °C, before the rains break.

The parks sit far apart. Flying between Lusaka, Mfuwe (South Luangwa) and the Lower Zambezi saves days of driving, and it is what most itineraries do.

The falls run on their own calendar. Peak flow arrives around March–May, when spray soaks the Knife-Edge Bridge and you get wet just standing there. That is spectacular but can hide the view. As the river drops, usually from about mid-August, Devil's Pool opens on the lip (check current conditions and operators), and by November the Zambian side can be a dry cliff with water mainly on the Zimbabwe side.

So if the falls are the whole point, aim April–May. Late August to September is a trade-off, not a falls season: flow is already declining and the Zambian side gets drier through the autumn, so treat the falls as a bonus alongside good game rather than the reason for the dates.

December to March is wet, hot and green. Most bush camps close, some roads become impassable, and rates drop sharply. Closure windows differ by park: Lower Zambezi camps typically shut about November–March, while Luangwa camps run roughly May–November, so a few Luangwa operators stay open into the wet months.

The rains also bring Liuwa Plain's wildebeest migration, which starts with the first rains around November. It is remote and logistics are harder, so plan it with an operator rather than independently.

Zambia's safari pricing is strongly seasonal. Low-season rates in January–March and December can be a fraction of peak, but you are trading away open camps and easy game viewing. Shoulder months in May–June and October–November often give the best value: camps open, prices below the July–September peak.

Domestic flights and park fees add up whichever month you choose. Check current park entry fees with the camp or operator, as they change.

Zambia sits in one time zone and does not use daylight saving. The plateau, including Lusaka, is around 1,200 m, so evenings are cooler than the latitude suggests. Bring a fleece for June–July and sun protection year-round.

Most Western passports enter visa-free for short stays; the KAZA UNIVISA is only worth it if you also cross to Zimbabwe. Check the current rules before you book flights.

Decide which matters more: wildlife or the falls. Wildlife points to June–October, with August–September the strongest all-round choice. The falls point to March–May. If you want both, aim late August to September and accept lower water at the falls.

If budget is the driver, look at May–June or October–November, when camps are open but rates sit below peak. If you are tied to school holidays, book July–August early and expect to pay for it.
