Zalalövő
Skip as a base unless you are on the Zala valley rail line: one afternoon covers the Roman site and two museums, then move on.
Zalalövő is a small Zala County town of about 3,000 people on the Zala river, once the Roman settlement of Municipium Aelium Salla. It is a rail halt between Zalaegerszeg and the Slovenian border, with two small museums, a Baroque chapel and horse yards in the surrounding villages. Most travellers pass through; a half day is enough, and the nearby villages hold most of the sleep and eat options.

No local bus or taxi in town; the centre is compact and walkable, but check distances to outlying guesthouses.
