Zakros
Half a day: walk the Gorge of the Dead to the Minoan palace at Kato Zakros, then a tavern lunch by the sea. Not a base — stay in Sitia or Palekastro.
Zakros is a quiet village in eastern Crete with the fourth-largest Minoan palace and the dramatic Gorge of the Dead. Most visitors come for a half-day hike from the village down to the coastal ruins, then eat at a seaside tavern. It is too small and remote to sleep in unless you want total quiet.
