Best tours in Zagreb: walking, food and day tours

Zagreb is small enough to walk in a morning, so tours here do two jobs: they explain the split between Upper Town (Gradec and Kaptol) and the Lower Town grid, and they get you to Plitvice without a car. Pick one city walk, add one food or market tour if you like eating, and treat Plitvice as a separate day.

Tip-based walking tours are the cheapest way in and cost you only what you decide to give, usually €10–20. Fixed-price small-group walks cost €15–25 and often include a funicular ride or a museum stop. Food tours cost more because you eat: expect €60–90 for 3–4 hours and several tastings. Day tours to Plitvice run €90–130 with park entry, and to the Zagorje hills or Samobor for wine and castles around €70–110.

Most city walking tours leave between 09:00 and 11:00 and again around 16:00–17:00, and last about two hours. Food tours usually start late morning so they hit Dolac market while it is busy, or late afternoon for a dinner-style route. Day tours to Plitvice leave early, often 07:00–08:30, and return to Zagreb in the evening.

Prices move with the season. In July and August, and through December for Advent, both prices and demand rise. Outside those windows you can often join a walk the same day. Museum entry is usually separate from any guided visit, so check what the price includes before you pay.

Book city walking tours online the day before, or just turn up at the meeting point if the operator allows walk-ups. For Plitvice, book the tour and the park entry together where possible, because timed park tickets sell out in summer and the operator needs your details in advance. Food tours are small and fill at weekends, so book two or three days ahead.
