Yuli sits in the Huatung Valley between Hualien and Taitung, flanked by mountains and mostly farmland. It is a rail stop, a noodle town and the trailhead for the Walami historic trail. Sights are spread out, so a scooter or bicycle decides your day.

Rent a bicycle or scooter near the station: many sights are out of town. Trains link Yuli with Hualien and Taitung; Sanmin station serves the northern side of the township.

- Scooter rental usually needs a licence and often an IDP; ask before you pay.
Yuli is a small, quiet township and feels safe. Real risks are mountain roads, river currents, typhoon weather and scooters on unfamiliar lanes.
