Give York 2 nights: the walls, Minster and Shambles fill one day, the railway and Viking museums the next. Book the Minster and Jorvik ahead.

York is a compact walled city in North Yorkshire, about 2 h by train from London King's Cross and 25 min from Leeds. Two nights covers the Minster, the walls, the Shambles and the National Railway Museum without rushing; one night is enough only if you skip a museum. Stay inside or just outside the walls, walk everywhere, and expect £60–150 a day per person excluding your bed for mid-range travel. It is a safe city; the main annoyances are crowds on narrow streets and pickpockets in the busiest spots.

Get around

The centre is walkable: Minster to the Shambles is about 5 min, station to Minster about 15 min. City walls run 2 mi (3.2 km) around the old town. Buses cover the suburbs and the station; taxis queue at the station rank and near Monkgate.

Language

English everywhere, with strong regional accents and vocabulary; Welsh and Gaelic appear on signs and in some communities but you will never need them. Visitors mostly trip over words, not accents.

  • Useful words: 'loo' toilet, 'queue' line, 'lift' elevator, 'pavement' sidewalk, 'return' round-trip ticket, 'cheers' thanks.
  • 'First floor' is one above the ground floor.
  • Politeness is indirect: 'I'm not sure that's quite right' can mean 'that's wrong'.

  • Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
  • Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
  • Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'

Scams and watch-outs

  • The Shambles and Minster yard get shoulder-to-shoulder in summer and at Christmas markets: go before 10:00 or after 16:00.
  • The riverside paths and some wall sections flood or close after heavy rain: check before you set out.
  • Wall walks have steep, uneven steps and no railings in places: not for everyone.
  • Book York Minster and Jorvik Viking Centre ahead in peak season; they use timed entry. The National Railway Museum is free and walk-in, but book specific experiences like the Driver Simulator separately.
  • Card is accepted almost everywhere, but a few small market stalls are cash only.

One of the safer UK cities for visitors. The real risks are crowds and pickpockets around the Shambles and Minster, uneven wall steps, and riverside paths that flood after heavy rain.
