York airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Because York has no airport, every route is really two legs: get off the plane, then get onto the rail line that serves York. Manchester Airport is the only one of the three with direct trains to York. Leeds Bradford is closest by road but has no station, so you add a bus or taxi. Heathrow is the longest and usually the most expensive, but it has the most flights.

Leeds Bradford sits about 50 km west of York and is the shortest road option. It has no railway station, so the standard move is bus 757 into Leeds, then a train from Leeds to York — a run of roughly 25–30 minutes with frequent departures. Manchester Airport has its own station on the rail network, and trains run toward York with a change at Manchester Piccadilly or, on some services, direct. Total time is roughly 2 hours. Advance tickets are the difference between a reasonable fare and an expensive one: book 4–12 weeks ahead for the £20–45 band, or pay considerably more on the day.

If you land late, check the last connection before committing. A taxi from Manchester Airport to York is 1 h 45–2 h 15 and about £110–150; 2026 estimate.

Heathrow is the long way round but often the cheapest flight. Take the Elizabeth line or Piccadilly line into London, cross to King's Cross, then an LNER or CrossCountry train to York. London–York is about 1 h 50 on the fast services. Total door to door is 3 h 30–4 h 30 and the rail leg is £35–80 advance, £150+ bought on the day.

The same pattern works from Gatwick, Stansted and Luton: get into London, then take the train north. If you are arriving in the evening, the last trains from King's Cross leave around 22:00–23:00, so a late landing may mean a London hotel night and a morning train.
