York is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, 100 km east of Perth in the Avon Valley, and its reason to exist for a visitor is a single walkable main street of late Victorian buildings that was never replaced by anything bigger. Most of the town's 2,500 residents live away from Avon Terrace, and the sights, food and beds all sit on that strip. One night covers it; two nights only works if you use York as a base for the Wheatbelt or the drive east to Wave Rock.

Get around
The historic centre is a small walkable area at the south end of Avon Terrace, and beds and food cluster along it. The town straggles north for a couple of miles along Highway 120 with little reason to go there. There is no local taxi service, so a car is needed for the golf course, the racecourse and Mount Brown Lookout.
