York airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

York is a small city on the I-80 corridor between Lincoln and Grand Island. Nothing flies into it, and no rail line serves it, so every route ends with a road leg. The table below compares the realistic ways to cover that leg.

Omaha Eppley Airfield (OMA) is the main gateway for this part of Nebraska. It sits just north of downtown Omaha, close to I-29 and I-80, so you are on the interstate within minutes of picking up a car. The drive west to York is about 130 km of open interstate, with rest areas and fuel stops along the way. Rental desks are in the terminal; book before you fly, because walk-up rates at small Midwest airports are high and weekend stock can run out.

Lincoln Airport (LNK) is smaller and closer: roughly 80 km, or 45 minutes, from York. Flights are fewer and often connect through Denver, Chicago or Dallas, so compare total journey time, not just the drive. If the fare difference is small, Lincoln saves you half an hour each way.

There is no train. Amtrak's California Zephyr crosses Nebraska on the Omaha–Lincoln–Grand Island line, but it does not stop in York, and there is no station transfer to the city. Treat rail as irrelevant for this trip unless you are already riding the Zephyr and arranging a pickup from Hastings or Grand Island — check current timetables, since the train runs once daily and is often late.

Intercity coaches run along I-80 between Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island. Stops are in those cities, not in York, so a coach only helps if someone meets you or you rent a car at the far end. For a car-free arrival, the honest answer is that York is hard to reach without a vehicle.

Once in York, local transport is minimal. There is no city bus network worth planning around, and ride-hailing coverage is thin outside Omaha and Lincoln. If you are staying in York without a car, choose lodging within walking distance of the downtown blocks and confirm with your hotel how you will get around.

Budget the airport leg as a car cost, not a ticket cost. A rental car at US$45–110 a day plus fuel covers the drive and then serves you for the rest of the trip, which is why it usually wins. Fuel for the Omaha–York run is roughly US$12–18 at 2026 prices, depending on the vehicle.

A one-way taxi or rideshare from Omaha is the expensive option: US$150–250 is typical for a 130 km trip, and you may wait for a driver willing to leave the metro. From Lincoln expect US$90–150. Ask for the price before you get in, and note that US tipping norms add 15–20% on taxi fares.

If you drop a rental car in a different city from where you picked it up, expect a one-way fee. These vary widely by company and can reach into the hundreds of dollars, so price the exact drop before booking. Returning the car in Omaha or Lincoln avoids the fee entirely.

Book your rental before flying. Small-airport desks have limited stock, and a Friday or holiday-weekend arrival can leave you with nothing but a premium rate.

Check your arrival time against daylight. The I-80 drive is straightforward, but winter ice and snow are real in Nebraska from November to March, and a night arrival on an unfamiliar road is worse.

If you land late, book one night near the Omaha or Lincoln airport and drive west the next morning rather than pushing on.

Keep small change and a card for fuel; most interstate stops are card-first and some rural pumps are unattended at night.
