Yinchuan is the capital of Ningxia, a Hui (Chinese Muslim) region on the Yellow River and the old heart of the Western Xia kingdom. The city itself is low-key; the reason to come is the desert-edge archaeology and rock art an hour or two outside town. Two nights covers the city sights and one full day out at the tombs or the mountains.

- The Western Xia tombs and Helan Mountain sites are 30–60 km out; tourist buses leave early (around 08:00–09:00) and return early afternoon, so one site per day by bus.
- Some Helan Mountain rock-art trails have been closed since a 2016 flood; check what is open before you go.
- Few people speak English outside hotels; have your address in Chinese characters.
Yinchuan is a calm, low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are winter cold, long unlit stretches at the outlying desert sites, and unlicensed taxis at the airport: use the official rank or a ride-hailing app.
