Give Yecheon one full day, not a base: sleep in Andong or Daegu and come for the archery field, Yongmunsa and the riverside pavilions.

Yecheon is a rural county in North Gyeongsang, about 1 h by bus from Daegu and 30–40 min by train from Andong. Its draw is a cluster of low-cost sights — Korea's largest archery experience complex, a mountain temple, Confucian pavilions and an astronomy centre — spread across a wide area with thin local buses. One day by car or taxi covers the best of it; without a car, pick two sights and accept the waits.

Get around

Local buses link the station and bus terminal to the archery field, hot springs and outlying sights, but run infrequently — check times at the terminal before you commit. Taxis are cheap (base fare around ₩3,800, cash or T-money; cards often not accepted) but scarce away from town. A rental car from Andong or Gumi, about an hour away, is the only way to see several spread-out sights in one day. Trains on the Jungang Line connect Yecheon with Andong, Dongdaegu and Seoul.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
  • Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
  • Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
  • Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty

Scams and watch-outs

  • Sights are 10–20 km apart with weak bus coverage: without a car, plan two stops, not five.
  • Yecheon Airport is an air-force base with only limited public access and occasional tours — do not plan a flight from it.
  • Some rural roads are narrow or steep; drive with care after dark.
  • Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner, and small places may shut early — eat when you see a queue.
  • Festival dates change every year; confirm on the county site before booking around one.

Yecheon is a low-crime rural county and safe for tourists; the real risks are thin bus service, unlit rural roads at night and winter ice. Keep the 1330 helpline for language help.
