Yarm
Use Yarm for one night or a day visit on the Tees, not as a base: the High Street, the viaduct and the riverside are one compact walk, and York or Durham is the real trip.
Yarm is a small North Yorkshire town at the tidal limit of the River Tees, with a broad Georgian High Street and a 43-arch railway viaduct. Most visitors come for a meal, a walk and a look at the viaduct, then move on. One night is enough; two if you want Preston Park and a slow lunch.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The High Street is the busy A67: heavy vehicles are banned but traffic is constant, so cross with care.
- Yarm station is a platform halt with no staff; buy or collect tickets before you travel.
- Eaglescliffe station is north of the river: allow 20–25 min to walk to Yarm High Street.
- Many High Street restaurants close between lunch and dinner; check hours before you go.
- The farmers market has moved to Crathorne Hall, second Sunday of the month, 10:00–14:00.
Yarm is a low-crime small town; the real risks are the busy A67 through the High Street, dark riverside paths after dusk, and unlit station approaches. Standard UK precautions apply.
