Yangon was Myanmar's capital until the government relocated to Nay Pyi Taw in 2005–2006, and it remains the country's largest city and main commercial centre. Its downtown grid still holds British colonial-era buildings — the former Secretariat, the High Court, banks and hotels — many now faded or closed, alongside the 2,600-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda, whose gilded stupa is Yangon's most recognisable landmark. Political conditions since the 2021 military takeover mean the situation for visitors can shift; official advice should be checked close to travel dates.
