Give Yamaguchi one night, not three: Rurikō-ji's pagoda, Sesshū's garden and Yuda Onsen fit a single unhurried day.
Yamaguchi is the prefectural capital and a small planned city that grew as a western copy of Kyoto in the 1300s, then lost its ruling family in 1551 and never became big. The sights sit in two clusters — the temple-and-shrine centre and Yuda Onsen — about 15–25 minutes apart by train, and most of the prefecture's famous stops (Hagi, Shimonoseki, Akiyoshidai) are day trips from here or from Shin-Yamaguchi. Come for one night, or as a quiet stop between Hiroshima and Fukuoka.

Get around
The JR Yamaguchi line links Shin-Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi and Yuda Onsen stations; local trains take 15–25 min between the two main stations. Buses run to Kenchōmae for Rurikō-ji, and there is a rentacycle opposite Yamaguchi station. Walking works inside each cluster but not between them — plan on bus or bike.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Sights are spread out and closing times are early: Rurikō-ji 09:00–17:00, Jōei-ji 08:00–17:00.
- Small temples and shops may take cash only; carry yen.
- Yuda Onsen hotels are the priciest beds in the city; Shin-Yamaguchi is the cheap fallback.
- Summer is humid and the city is inland: build the day around morning and late afternoon.
Yamaguchi is a quiet, low-crime city and feels safe at night. The real risks are summer heat, thin evening bus service, and walking between clusters after dark on unlit roads — take the train or a taxi instead.
