Give Ya'an one night as a Chengdu add-on for Bifengxia pandas and Mengding tea, or skip it: the town itself is thin and the good sights need a car.
Ya'an is a prefecture-level city 120 km southwest of Chengdu on the old Sichuan-Tibet highway, and the gateway to western Sichuan. It rains a lot — over 1,000 mm a year, most of it June to August — which is why locals call it the rainy city. The city core is ordinary; the draw is the surrounding mountains, the Bifengxia panda base and Mengding Mountain, the claimed birthplace of cultivated tea. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kangding or use it as a one-night stop from Chengdu.

Get around
City buses cover the urban area and stop at every stop; shared bikes are everywhere and unlock through WeChat. Taxis are cheap for short hops. For Bifengxia, Mengding Mountain, Shangli and the mountain reserves you need a car, a taxi hired by the day, or a tour — public transport to the trailheads is thin.

Scams and watch-outs
- Rain: June–August can dump a month's water in days; mountain roads and trails close or turn dangerous.
- Altitude: Niubeishan, Jiajinding and Jiajin Mountain sit above 3,000 m — ascend slowly and watch for headaches.
- Bifengxia has two separate tickets (gorge and wildlife park) and the panda base is inside the gorge area; check current prices and hours before you go.
- English is limited outside hotels; have your destination written in Chinese characters.
- Mobile payment (Alipay or WeChat Pay) is close to essential; set it up before you arrive.
Ya'an is a low-crime city and walking the centre at night is fine. The real risks are rain and mountain roads: flash flooding and landslides in summer, and altitude sickness above 3,000 m.
