Give Xinxiang one night as a rail stop between Zhengzhou and the Taihang cliff villages, or skip it and go straight to the Wanxianshan/Guoliang area.
Xinxiang is a 1,400-year-old city on the Wei River in north Henan, one stop north of Zhengzhou East on the Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed line. The city itself is a working industrial and commercial centre with a free museum and a night-market street; the reason travellers come is the Huixian County mountains 1.5–2 h to the northwest, where the Guoliang Tunnel and the Wanxianshan cliffs sit. Most people use Xinxiang as the gateway to that area, not as a destination in its own right.

Scams and watch-outs
- The mountain scenic areas are 1.5–2 h from the city: do not plan a same-morning arrival and a same-evening train.
- Guoliang Tunnel and the Wanxianshan access rules change with safety checks and weather: confirm the area is open before you set out.
- Kunshan Tunnel above Guoliang is closed to general traffic and only passable by small local vehicles; agree the price before you get in.
- Summer brings the year's rain (July averages about 164 mm) and flash-flood risk in the gorges.
- The Pingyuan Museum closes Mondays and stops entry at 16:30.
Xinxiang is a low-crime city by international standards; the real risks are traffic, winter air quality and mountain weather. Keep the usual street-smart habits and carry your passport.
