Xining sits at 2,270 m on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau and is the practical first stop before higher ground: Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Tongren and the Qinghai–Tibet railway all start here. The city itself is a Hui and Tibetan trading town with a handful of good museums, a large mosque and street food, and most travellers use it to acclimatise for a night or two before heading west or south.

City buses cost ¥1 flat and route 1 runs along the main street to the train station. Taxis run on the meter with a ¥8 flagfall; some drivers negotiate late at night. The metro is limited, so plan on buses or taxis for museum and mosque hops.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: 2,270 m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and skip alcohol if you feel headachy.
- The path up Laoye Mountain and the hill walk at North Mountain Temple have been closed for erosion; check locally before going.
- Non-Muslims cannot enter Dongguan Mosque during Friday prayers (before about 12:30) and never enter the prayer hall.
- Qinghai Lake tours sold cheaply in town often include forced shopping stops; read what is and is not included.
- Many museums close on Mondays and stop issuing tickets 30 minutes before closing.
Xining is a low-crime city and generally safe for tourists. The real risks are altitude on arrival, thin air and cold at night even in summer, and unlicensed Qinghai Lake tours that pad the day with shopping stops.
