Xinghua
兴化
Go for a 1–2 day trip in late March–April for the canola fields; skip outside bloom season unless you have other business in Jiangsu.
Xinghua is a county-level city in northern Jiangsu, best known for the Qianduo Scenic Area – thousands of islets of rapeflower (canola) fields crisscrossed by canals. The bloom lasts from late March through April, drawing crowds for a flower festival. Outside that window, there is little reason to visit. English is scarce; a basic grasp of Mandarin helps.
