Xilamuren
Half a day to one night: ride an ATV or horse on the grassland, sleep in a yurt camp, then head back to Hohhot. Not a base.
Xilamuren is a grassland town north of Hohhot, built around yurt encampments for Chinese tourists. The landscape is open and flat, the experience is commercial but fun: ATVs, horses, evening shows and milk tea. Most visitors come for a half-day ride or one night in a yurt, then return to Hohhot.
