Xikou
溪口
Half a day is enough: see Chiang Kai-shek's estate and Xuedou Temple, then move on to Ningbo or Hangzhou. Not a base.
Xikou is a small town in the mountains of Zhejiang, best known as the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek. Most visitors come on a half-day trip from Ningbo or as a stop between Shanghai and the coast. The main sights — the Chiang family estate, the old salt shop and Xuedou Temple — are walkable. Beyond that, the surrounding hills offer hiking, but the town itself has little to fill a full day.
