Stay one night, two at most: Xiangcheng is a road stop on the Sichuan–Yunnan backdoor, not a destination you build a trip around.
Xiangcheng (Chaktreng in Tibetan) sits in a high Kham valley in western Sichuan, at roughly 2,900 m, between Litang and Shangri-La. Its draw is the valley itself: white-walled cubicle farmhouses scattered across wheat fields, a working monastery above the new town, and a bus station that makes it a natural overnight break on a long, rough road. There is little to see in the town centre, so plan around the walk out to the villages and the monastery, then move on.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Taxis and shared cars exist for the monastery trailhead and village trips; agree the price first. Most travellers arrive and leave by long-distance bus.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: the town sits near 2,900 m and the passes on both roads go over 4,000 m. Arrive from a lower base and take the first day easy.
- Power cuts happen; some guesthouses have no generator, so hot water can fail.
- Buy your onward bus ticket on arrival, not on the morning of travel: summer buses fill and the office opens late.
- The southern road toward Shangri-La has long unpaved sections and can close after rain; ask at the bus station before committing to a self-drive route.
- Local disputes over land have turned violent in the past; keep out of village arguments and report anything serious to the police.
Low crime against travellers, but altitude, rough roads and occasional power cuts are the real risks. Register your stay if your hotel asks, carry your passport, and keep cash for places that do not take cards.
