Xiamen/Gulangyu
鼓浪屿
Give Gulangyu one full day and one night on the island; day-trippers get the crowds and the ferry queue, not the quiet.
Gulangyu is a 2 km² car-free island a short ferry hop from Xiamen, UNESCO-listed for its colonial-era mansions and gardens. It is one of China's most-visited sites, so timing matters more than the sight list: arrive on a weekday, sleep on the island, and walk the back streets before the tour groups land.
- Country
- China
- Local name
- 鼓浪屿
- Best months
- Check — the source gives no month-by-month climate; it only notes the island is best avoided during major Chinese holidays and is more pleasant on weekdays than weekends.
- Avoid
- Major Chinese public holidays; weekends (crowds). Typhoon season roughly Sep–Nov can suspend ferries — check warnings.
- Stay
- 1 night
Checked 2026-09. Prices, hours and rules change; anything marked (check) is not confirmed.
Essentials
- Currency
- CNY
- Money
- Alipay and WeChat Pay accept Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Amex cards; single payments over ¥200 carry a fee of about 3% on a foreign card (smaller ones are free), and per-payment and yearly caps apply — check the app. Keep a second way to pay.
- SIM and data
- A roaming eSIM from outside China routes traffic through its home network, so Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work without a VPN — the simplest setup.
- Emergency
- Police 110 · Fire 119 · Ambulance 120
- Plugs
- Types A, C, I · 220 V · 50 Hz · Many sockets take flat two-pin (A), round two-pin (C) and angled three-pin (I) plugs; UK plugs need an adapter.
- Tipping
- Restaurants: No tip; upmarket hotels add 10–15% service.; Taxis and DiDi: No tip.; Tour guides and drivers: Expected on organised tours: about ¥100–200 a day for a guide, ¥50–100 for a driver.; Hotel porters: Not expected; ¥10–20 in luxury hotels.
- Water
- Not for drinking from the tap; bottled water ¥2–5, and kettles and free bottles in hotel rooms. Restaurants serve hot water or tea.
- Toilets
- Public toilets are frequent and free; squat toilets outside hotels and malls. Carry tissues — many have no paper.

Get around
No cars, motorcycles or bicycles: walk, or take the battery golf-cart bus on its coastal loop (flat ¥10 from the ferry terminal). The island is hilly; the Longshan Cave tunnel near Sanqiutian is a useful shortcut under one of the hills.

Sleep
- On Gulangyu island
- Sleep here to get the early and late hours; many old colonial-era buildings have become guesthouses (check availability and prices).
- Xiamen island (downtown)
- Cross by ferry each day; daytime visitor ferries leave from Youlun Matou (Xiagu), night ferries from Lundu Matou. Details check.
Language
Mandarin is the language of the whole country, written in Simplified characters; Cantonese dominates Guangdong and Hong Kong, and dozens of regional languages survive at home. English is on metro signs, airports and large hotels; elsewhere use a translation app. Pinyin (the romanisation) helps with names but tones change meaning.
- Translation apps: Baidu Translate, Youdao, Microsoft Translator and Apple Translate work without a VPN; Google Translate needs one or a roaming eSIM.
- Show destinations to taxi drivers in characters; copy them from Amap.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and a nod; use surnames with a title; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses
- Face: Disagree privately and indirectly; avoid: Correcting or embarrassing someone in front of others
- Gifts: Give with two hands; expect the gift to be refused once or twice and opened later; avoid: Clocks, umbrellas, white flowers, sets of four
- Business cards: Present and receive with both hands, read it, keep it on the table; avoid: Writing on it or pocketing it at once
- Queues and crowds: Hold your ground politely in scrums at buses and lifts; avoid: Taking pushing personally
- Temples: Walk clockwise around Tibetan stupas and prayer wheels; remove hats; avoid: Touching statues or photographing where signs forbid
- Politics: Listen; follow your host's lead; avoid: Raising Tibet, Taiwan, Xinjiang, 1989 or the party leadership
- Numbers and colour: Red and 8 are lucky; red envelopes carry money gifts; avoid: Writing names in red; the number 4
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry tickets are return and must be kept; they are valid up to 20 days.
- Visitor numbers are capped at 65,000 per day; holiday and weekend tickets can sell out.
- Carry your passport to buy tickets and board the ferry.
- Daytime visitor ferries leave from Youlun Matou (Xiagu), not Lundu Matou; only the night service uses Lundu.
- Ferries can be suspended in typhoon season (roughly Sep–Nov) or high wind: check warnings before you travel.
Very safe by Chinese city standards: no traffic on the island, so the real risks are steep wet steps, summer heat and typhoon ferry suspensions. Keep your return ticket and passport on you.
