Worland
Worland, Wyoming
Use Worland as one night on a Big Horn Basin drive, not a base: the town itself is 2–3 hours, and the mountains are the reason to stop.
Worland is a farm-and-oil town of about 5,000 on the Big Horn River, in the middle of the Big Horn Basin. It is not a sightseeing town: it is a bed, a meal and a fuel stop between Cody, Thermopolis and the Big Horn Mountains. Come for one night, or two if you want a full day on the mountain roads west of town. The town sits at 4,000 ft (1,220 m), so summer days are hot and nights cool, and winter is cold and dry.

Get around
You need a car. Worland has no useful local transit for visitors, and the sights people come for — the Big Horn Mountains, the Wind River Canyon, Thermopolis — are 30–90 minutes away. US-16 runs west toward Ten Sleep and the mountain passes; US-20/WY-789 runs south to Thermopolis and north toward Basin and Cody. Fuel up in town before heading into the mountains: services thin out fast.
See and do

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and cell coverage is patchy on US-16 west of Ten Sleep and on mountain roads: download offline maps before you leave town.
- Winter storms close or make mountain passes dangerous; check Wyoming road conditions (WYDOT) before driving US-16 over the Big Horns.
- Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk — deer and pronghorn are common on the basin highways.
- Summer heat and dry air: carry more water than you think you need if you hike.
- Small-town hours: many restaurants and shops close early or on Sundays — check before you count on a late meal.
Worland is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are on the road: long empty stretches, winter ice on US-16, wildlife at dawn and dusk, and patchy cell coverage in the mountains.
