Woomera
Stop for one night (two if you want the museum unhurried): the town is a 6 km detour off the Stuart Highway at Pimba, and 2 hours covers the sights.
Woomera is a company town for a rocket range, 483 km north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. Everything sits on two short avenues: a park of missiles, two small museums, a pool, a pub and a caravan park. It is a leg-stretch and a sleep on the Adelaide–Coober Pedy drive, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel at Pimba costs about 30c/litre more than coastal towns: fill up before you leave Port Augusta or Coober Pedy.
- Mobile coverage is patchy: Telstra usually works, Optus may, Vodafone generally does not. Download offline maps.
- Wi-Fi is not available at the Eldo Hotel and is unlikely anywhere else in town.
- Summer days regularly pass 40 °C; carry at least 4–5 L of water per person in the car and do not walk far after 10:00.
- Some land around Woomera is a prohibited military testing area: stay on marked roads and do not enter fenced zones.
- The town is owned by the Department of Defence; shops and accommodation operate on leased land, so opening hours can change — check before relying on a service.
Very safe for a small outback town: the real risks are heat, distance and fuel, not crime. Carry water, fill up before Pimba, and tell someone your route if you leave the sealed road.
