Woolgoolga
Woopi
Give Woolgoolga one night, two at most: a beach-and-headland stop on the Pacific Highway 25 km north of Coffs Harbour, not a destination in itself.
Woolgoolga is a small coastal town on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, about 25 km north of Coffs Harbour and roughly 20 minutes off the Pacific Highway. It has a long beach, a surf-friendly headland and one of regional Australia's larger Sikh temples, which reflects a Punjabi community that has farmed bananas here for decades. Most travellers use it as a half-day or one-night break on the Sydney–Brisbane drive; the town itself is walkable and quiet, and the nearest airport and railway station are both in Coffs Harbour.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Pacific Highway traffic: use the marked crossings, not the middle of the road.
- Surf and rips on the open beach: swim between the flags when lifeguards are on duty.
- Buses to and from Coffs Harbour are infrequent, so check the timetable before you rely on one.
- The temple is a working place of worship: dress modestly and visit outside prayer times.
A quiet, low-crime coastal town; the real risks are highway traffic, surf rips and summer bushfire weather. Check fire danger ratings before driving inland.
