Wooler

Use Wooler as a 2-night walking base for the Cheviot Hills and Chillingham: without a car, one night is enough and the buses are the limit.

Wooler is a small market town of about 2,000 people in north Northumberland, on the A697 lowland route into Scotland below the Cheviot Hills. It is a base, not a sight in itself: the draws are hill walking, St Cuthbert's Way, Chillingham Castle and its wild cattle, and the Ad Gefrin distillery and museum. Buses reach Berwick-upon-Tweed and Alnwick, but Chillingham and the hills need a car, a bike or a long walk.

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 10 minutes. There is no railway, and the town taxi service has folded (check before travel whether any local taxi is running). For Chillingham Castle, the wild cattle, the Ad Gefrin site and the hillforts you need a car, a bike or a long walk. Buses run to Berwick-upon-Tweed (464, six times Mon–Sat, about 50 min) and Alnwick (470/473, four times Mon–Sat, about 45 min; check the 2026 timetable); the X16 to Newcastle is a weekday commuter run only.
