Wonosobo
Two nights: one for the Dieng Plateau sunrise, one for the town. Skip it as a base if you only have three nights in Java.
Wonosobo sits at about 800 m between Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing, a cool, quiet market town in Central Java. Almost everyone comes for the Dieng Plateau, 26 km north and 2,000 m up, where you get a coloured crater lake, Hindu temples and a sunrise. The town itself is small: a square, a market, noodle stalls, and life that stops by 19:00. Two nights is the useful number — one for Dieng, one for the town and the tea country around it. Three nights if you want to climb Sindoro or Sumbing.

Scams and watch-outs
- Dieng is 2,000 m up and cold at dawn: 5–10 °C, wind and mist. Bring a jacket, not a beach layer.
- Roads to Dieng are narrow and winding with steep drops; avoid riding a scooter there in rain or after dark.
- In July and August farmers dry tobacco leaves on the roads between Wonosobo and Temanggung — expect slow traffic and reduced visibility.
- The town shuts down by 19:00. Eat before then or you are limited to what is open near your hotel.
- Kalianget warm baths are basic: local cleanliness standards, not spa ones.
