Wolf Point
Wolf Point, Montana
Give Wolf Point one night, not a base: the Amtrak stop, the July rodeo or the August pow-wow are the reasons to get off US-2 here.
Wolf Point is a Hi-Line town of about 2,600 people and the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, home to both the Assiniboine and Sioux. It sits on US-2 in northeastern Montana, with an unstaffed Amtrak stop on the daily Empire Builder and twice-daily Cape Air flights to Billings. Sights are thin; the rodeo, the pow-wow and the Missouri River country around it are the draw. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or stay a single night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The Amtrak station is unstaffed and trains can arrive at unsociable hours: check the timetable before you book a bed.
- Cell coverage and fuel get sparse east and west on US-2: fill up in Glasgow or Sidney.
- Winter brings snow, ice and long stretches of open road; services thin out.
- The Wolf Point Museum opens June through August only.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are winter driving on US-2, long gaps between fuel stops and alcohol-fuelled trouble late on Main Street. Standard US precautions apply.
